The case
AB came to us in her late thirties with a history that had become emotionally and physically exhausting: recurrent miscarriages, both from natural conception and from IVF cycles. The repeated losses had occurred across different protocols, ruling out a problem with one specific IVF approach.
By the time she contacted the clinic, the standard investigations had returned no clear medical explanation. There was no obvious place left to intervene.
How we read the pattern
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, recurrent miscarriage is rarely a problem with the conception event itself. The egg met the sperm; an embryo formed; implantation occurred. What failed, repeatedly, was the body's ability to hold the pregnancy.
That points to the substrate — the uterine environment, hormonal regulation in the first weeks, blood and energy supply to the implantation site, and the body's overall reserves. When losses happen on both natural and IVF cycles, it is a strong signal that the protocol is not the issue; the underlying biology is.
For AB, the broader presentation suggested a pattern of weakness in what TCM frames as Kidney and Spleen function — the systems responsible for reproductive regulation and for nourishing a developing pregnancy. Treatment was focused there.
Treatment
The programme was personalised herbal medicine, adjusted across the menstrual cycle and re-evaluated as her response unfolded. The aim was not to "make her pregnant" — she had conceived many times — but to bring the underlying terrain to a state where a pregnancy could be carried.
Treatment ran for approximately ten weeks before conception.
Outcome
AB conceived naturally during the treatment period. The pregnancy progressed without loss and she delivered a healthy baby.
Why this matters
Recurrent miscarriage is one of the most distressing diagnoses in fertility medicine, partly because the standard message is often "try again." When losses happen on both natural and IVF cycles, "try again" is not enough — the pattern is telling you that something about the underlying biology has not been addressed. Personalised TCM, focused on the substrate rather than the conception event, gives that biology a different starting point. This case is one of many in our practice where it has made the difference.
If you have had recurrent losses and feel that the standard pathway has run out of options, we would be happy to assess your case.
